"How hard is the CSCA?" is the first question every applicant asks, and most answers are vibes. We tagged the official past-paper questions in our bank by difficulty, subject by subject. Here is what the data says.

The short answer

The CSCA is a curriculum test, not a selection olympiad. The majority of every paper sits at or below standard Chinese-textbook level. It feels hard to international students for one reason: the topics and question style come from the Chinese high-school curriculum, which differs from what most other school systems emphasise.

Subject by subject

• Physics is the friendliest paper: in our tagging, roughly two-thirds of questions are fundamentals, and genuinely hard questions are rare — a handful per sitting. Mechanics (Newton's laws, kinematics, work-energy, circular motion) and electrostatics dominate.
• Mathematics sits in the middle: about half fundamentals, a strong third standard level, and a thin hard tail. Coverage is concentrated in functions and algebra.
• Chemistry is the densest paper: it leans on the middle band — over half of the questions are standard level — and it is the most language-heavy STEM subject, with many "which of the following statements is correct" questions that test precise reading as much as chemistry.

What "hard" actually means here

For most candidates the real difficulty is not intellectual, it is format familiarity:

• 75 seconds per question leaves no time to re-derive formulas.
• Chinese-curriculum phrasing and notation take getting used to.
• Statement-judgement questions punish careless reading, especially in chemistry.

All three are trainable in weeks, which is why past-paper practice moves scores faster than more theory study.

A sane preparation plan

1. Baseline: one full past paper per subject, timed. Note your score and where the time went.
2. Targeted drilling: fix the two or three topics that cost you the most marks — filter the bank by topic.
3. Format training: finish with full-length mocks under the real interface and clock, so nothing about exam day is new.
